Engine Overhaul

How Does an Engine Work?
Ford, Dodge, Jeep, Kia, and Honda may have different engine designs, but they all operate on the same fundamental principles. Simply put, an internal combustion engine converts energy from burning gasoline into mechanical work, or torque, that turns the wheels of your vehicle. Engines have pistons that move up and down inside cylinders, connected to a crankshaft. As the pistons move, they power the crankshaft, which ultimately powers your car’s wheels. Vehicles can have anywhere from 2 to 12 cylinders.
Every time you drive, your engine performs thousands of controlled explosions by mixing fuel with oxygen to create combustion. The expanding gases from these small explosions push the pistons, generating power. During the intake stroke, valves open to let the piston pull in air. As the piston moves back up, the air-fuel mixture is compressed before ignition. At Automotive Unlimited in Chanhassen, MN, we understand every step of this process and are experts in diagnosing and overhauling engines that no longer perform as they should.
How Do I Know If My Engine Needs an Overhaul?
Your vehicle’s engine is the heart of your car. Over time, wear and tear can lead to significant performance loss. If your engine is showing signs of severe damage or you’ve experienced multiple engine-related repairs, it may be time to consider an engine overhaul. Unlike minor repairs, an overhaul involves disassembling the engine, inspecting each part, and restoring it to like-new condition with replacement or refurbished components.
Here are some signs your vehicle may need an engine overhaul:
-
Excessive oil consumption or blue exhaust smoke – indicating worn piston rings or valve seals
-
Low compression across multiple cylinders – causing reduced power and efficiency
-
Knocking or tapping noises from inside the engine – pointing to worn bearings or internal damage
-
Metal shavings in the oil – a clear sign of internal engine wear
-
Chronic overheating or repeated head gasket failures
At Automotive Unlimited, we specialize in full engine overhauls for all makes and models. Our ASE-certified technicians will assess your engine and recommend whether an overhaul is the right solution or if a replacement is more cost-effective.
Why Choose an Engine Overhaul?
